The Power of Reflection

Over the past few weeks, I’ve spent time with clients, myself, and my coach reflecting on a year that has been unique for everyone. Some approach these sessions with hesitation—perhaps even resistance—but they always leave feeling lighter, inspired, and ready for what’s next.

Most realise just how much they’ve achieved over the year—often more than they initially thought. Reflection is a simple yet transformative tool. It activates the brain’s default mode network (DMN), which is essential for gaining perspective, building self-awareness, and learning from experience. Our brain thrives on clarity, and reflection creates the mental space needed to organise thoughts and emotions.

Reflection allows us to:

💡 Gain Perspective – See the bigger picture and recognise growth.

💡 Learn from Experience – Extract lessons from challenges and successes.

💡 Align with Our Values – Ensure our actions reflect what truly matters.

💡 Build Confidence – Celebrate progress and reconnect with our strengths.

💡 Gain Self-Awareness – Uncover patterns that hold us back or propel us forward.

The Science Behind Reflection

Research supports the power of reflection. Neuroscientist Mary Helen Immordino-Yang’s work highlights how moments of introspection enable us to synthesise information and connect it with our values, helping us make meaningful decisions. Additionally, Daniel Goleman, in his work on emotional intelligence, emphasises self-awareness as a cornerstone for personal and professional growth—and reflection is one of the best ways to build it.

How to Reflect Effectively

Reflection doesn’t have to be reserved for the year-end. It’s equally powerful on a daily or regular basis. Here are a few simple steps:

  1. Set Aside Time – Even 10 minutes a day can be enough.

  2. Ask Yourself Key Questions – Examples include: What went well today? What could I improve? How did I show up in alignment with my values?

  3. Journal Your Thoughts – Writing helps to clarify and organise your thoughts.

  4. Identify Patterns – Look for recurring themes in your reflections.

  5. Celebrate Successes – Acknowledge progress and achievements, no matter how small.

Resources to Enhance Your Reflection Practice

For those looking to deepen their practice, consider these resources:

  • TED Talk: The Power of Self-Reflection by Dr. Tasha Eurich. Eurich discusses how increased self-awareness can enhance both personal and professional success.

  • Book: Emotional Agility by Susan David. This book explores how to navigate life’s twists and turns with greater awareness and resilience, offering practical exercises for reflection and self-awareness.

Make It a Priority

If you’ve been thinking about carving out space for reflection—and it pairs perfectly with vision-setting—but haven’t done so, I encourage you to make it a priority this year.

Reflection is not just a tool for looking back; it’s a springboard for moving forward with clarity and intention.
